BUSINESS SUPPORT PROGRAM

"You Don't Know What You Don't Know"

That's one of the biggest problems for anyone who runs a small business. In fact, the 10 greatest worries of the owners/MDs of small businesses are:

  • Sales
  • Cash flow and funding
  • Profitability
  • Marketing
  • Legislation
  • Loneliness
  • Lack of time
  • Lack of personal exit strategy
  • Loss of original vision
  • Lack of up-to-date information

However confident you are as an owner/MD, there are times when you wish that you had another mature and experienced business person to provide that vital second opinion, and to bounce ideas off. MDs of large companies can call on a board of directors, but MDs of small companies do not have this luxury.

Under the Business Support Program, one of our advisors acts as the program co-ordinator/mentor for the company.

Your Advisor:

  • is available on a 'hot line' number at all reasonable times to talk through issues on the MD's mind.
  • will find the answer to any business query the MD may have, by drawing on the vast resources of Business Advisors WA and the Institute for Independent Business.
  • will sit in on the company's regular strategy and planning meetings to ensure that the company is progressing to plan.
  • will plan and co-ordinate with the MD whatever practical assistance is needed by using expertise from Business Advisors WA and the Institute for Independent Business.

Through this program, the MD gets a 'virtual' board of professional directors to advise and assist.

FREE CONSULTATION

When you first went into business you had a vision, a goal and lots of enthusiasm. Today you are more likely to have regulation, problems and priorities and what you most definitely lack is enough time, expertise and focus.

The reality is that many of the issues you are grappling with are not unique and there are solutions. Many MDs try to fix things themselves, but somehow they frequently do not succeed. Why? Because they do not have the time, do not have the requisite expertise at their disposal and often have many more urgent things to do first. The issues which are not quite so urgent could of course be sapping the life-blood out of your business over time.

Take an hour or so away from the business and have a session with one of our advisors. Be prepared to be honest and get value from the consultation. You’ll certainly enjoy the experience and you should at the conclusion begin to see the way forward.

The consultation is informal but structured and takes the form of a Q&A session where our advisor will explore various elements of your business. All aspects of your business will be covered from your basic vision, strategy, products/services, marketing & sales, to finance and operations. The outcome of the session will be a short list of areas or issues where further action or even analysis may be required.

This free consultation can be held at a place and time of your choosing – and it is totally free and there is no subsequent obligation in any form.

WA GAS EXPLOSION HURTS SMALL BUSINESS

The effects of the gas explosion on Varanus Island are already being felt by businesses across the State, and it is unlikely that any business will avoid a negative flow-on. At the very least, the laying-off of construction and mining workers will lead to a reduction of demand across all sectors. It will be several months before supplies are fully re-stated and all business owners are encouraged to review their operations to assess what future effects may be experienced. Early remedial action may save costs and avoid lost production over the coming months.

Small Business Minister Margaret Quirk has issued a press release encouraging small business owners to curb their energy use saying that although supply would resume, at least partially within two months, some businesses - especially those in the mining, resource and building sectors - were already feeling the pinch.
